I think my CPU fried, suggestions?

So I was using my PC a few days ago, everything going smoothly. I click "play" on the blizzard app to load up overwatch, and my pc immediately shuts off. My immediate though is that the GPU fried. Tried turning it back on, light flickers, but nothing happens, and no post.

I take the GPU out, thinking that's the issue, plug the hdmi directly into the MoBo, same thing. I hear a tick like it's getting power, the fans spin momentarily, the light on my Cooler Master water cooler turns on for a second, but then all the power goes off again. The only light that stays on is the power light for the power button. I try troubleshooting different parts, take out ram, swap for older ram, try with no ram... no post with any configuration. I eventually think it must be the mobo.

I ordered a new mobo... asus z170-pro. It came this morning, I installed the old cpu into it, tried booting with just PSU, cpu, cooler, and my ssd. Same thing happens. The light on the cooler turns on and the fans spin momentarily, but they immediately shut off and there's no post nor any beeps coming from the speaker.

So I'm assuming my cpu fried? Would others agree? Any other suggestions I should try before I scrap this system and build a new one? If you have any questions or details you need to give a better answer let me know!

Could be, but I would sooner see this a potential PSU problem. When you say 'shut off' do you mean, PC power effectively cuts out, or PC went through a shut down process? I would presume the former.

I would paperclip test the PSU, or better yet use a multimeter to read PSU voltages if you can. I would also recheck all connections and just ensure that everything has been connected properly (just to be on the cautious side).

Good question, I guess that was poor wording. The original shut off was the screen going black, fans/cpu not running, it still had power. Subsequent turn ons, 'shutting off' was referring to the fact that it stopped trying to boot. PSU still supplying power (based on the mobo still having the green light), but nothing seemed to be using it. Now it could be a PSU issue, but the lights are running on the psu, and on the new mobo, I'm seeing a green power light on the indicator led that it's getting power. I guess it's possible it's not getting 'full' power that it needs. Is that what you're leaning towards?

Yes that's what i'm leaning towards, same as why I'd suggest using another PSU or a multimeter, as the paperclip test only indicates if the PSU is giving power, but not how much power it is giving.

It's an easier test than replacing the CPU. You've already attempted to rule out RAM and MOBO. So for power issues, I would lean towards the PSU being faulty first. Then the CPU if a PSU swap also yields no results.

Obviously this is dependant on what you have around you to test with! Usually it's easier to find someone with a spare PSU to test with.

Sure enough it was the PSU. I ran out to Best Buy to buy a cheap one to test, and it's booting no problem now. The 'bad' one is my first modular PSU, and also the first one I owned with lights on it. All the lights were going and like I said, the new motherboard was showing power, so it was odd to me. I guess it just had a short and could only supply minimal power.

Oh yeah, definitely aware of that. This is just holding me over until the new one comes in the mail tomorrow or the next day now.
