hi everyone
i have the z170 d3h gigabyte mobo
i want to connect my sound system to my pc
i have a problem in my sound system hdmi ports ( very noisy and static for some reason)
so i cant connect my pc to my sound system via hdmi
my other option is connecting my pc directly to tv for picture
and for sound to connect my pc to my sound system
right now i connect both via aux normal 3.5 jack and the the white and red jacks
can i connect via optical connection to have a 5.1 system work
coz i am sure the normal 3.5 jack wont give me the needed sound i seek
or should i buy a sound card if the borad doesnt support that

my mobo spec in the audio sec is Audio
Realtek® ALC1150 codec
High Definition Audio
2/4/5.1/7.1-channel
Support for S/PDIF Out

The GT1030 is probably the best HTPC card if it's solely for video (no gaming). I linked a low-profile, fanless version but there are others.

They also seem to have two different choices for outputs:
HDMI + DVI, or
HDMI + DP

(no VGA support)

Again, if you do NOT have a video card, and decide to get this you would:
a) install physically
b) attach to HDTV
c) install latest NVidia drivers
d) setup video in HDTV section (AFAIK)
e) audio I think can be chosen in the NVidia Control Panel, OR by right-clicking the audio-icon (lower right of desktop)-> playback devices ...

You can have multiple audio devices installed (onboard Realtek...
Do you have a graphics card or not?

Static may indicate a CPU driver hogging issue. See latencymon

Sound card? No.. why? What OUTPUT would you use that you can't do from the motherboard, but again you should figure out what's wrong with HDMI.

*If you use the iGPU (so motherboard HDMI) and can't figure out what's going on there then buy an inexpensive VIDEO CARD. Perhaps a GTX1050 since I believe it supports HDR, 4K@60FPS, and H265/HEVC decoding. (even if you don't need it now)

If using the video card NOW then try using the motherboard HDMI (so iGPU) instead just to see if it works.

**Playback devices should obviously be set to the proper audio output (i.e. NVidia HDMI or whatever).

You can have multiple audio devices installed (onboard Realtek, sound card, video card) but if you choose for example "NVidia HDMI" then the video card is processing the audio. If you have only the Intel iGPU then the sound is from the CPU. If you connect to the MOTHERBOARD audio outputs (TOSLINK, 3.5mm analog..) then you use the onboard Realtek chip.

TOSLINK if used I believe needs software that works and for it to be enabled in that software (media player) so it's not my top choice. HDMI is hands down.
