Can I plug in 8 pin CPU power cable to 4 pin Motherboard

I just realized that my MOBO only accepts a 4 pin cable but my PSU only has an 8 pin cable. Connecting them is possible but does it actually work ? I'd prefer work done with no adapters since it's Sunday, I can't buy any and I'm nearly done with the build

The 8-pin cable is likely a 4+4 Pin ATX/EPS connector. A hybrid of the 4 PIN ATX12V and EPS 12V connectors that can be split in half or combined to accommodate either the EPS 12V Socket or the ATX 12V socket.
