Hi, I have a question over a new build I'm looking into, is it true that Intel i7 7700k will not run Windows 7? Will the 6700k run it?

I know lots of people out there love Windows 10 and pushing everybody to upgrade, but I'm sorry but I just really like Windows 7 :/

Solution
An i7 7700k will run Windows 7.

The only thing it can't do is Windows updates, which you should run to be secure.

Microsoft is doing this to force new people to upgrade to Windows 10 with the new processors.

At work I specifically ordered an i7-6700T for our Windows 7 computers, but Dell in their infinite wisdom gave us a free upgrade to an i7-7700T.

Everything worked great, all of our programs worked, but as soon as I went to do Windows Update I received a message saying, ... NO

When we received the new computers with i7-6700T everything worked perfectly, including Windows Update.

For any motherboard you are considering, check the cpu support list as well as the list of drivers supported.

I run I5-7600K on a Z170 motherboard with windows 7 no problem.

The kind of non support you might see is for integrated intel drivers; something a 7700K user is not likely to care about much.

Per above, there is no need for windows update since no new features will be implemented.
Security updates are still supported through 2022.

Windows 7 does not natively support USB 3.0. If the motherboard only has USB 3.0 ports then you won't be able to use a USB keyboard and/or mouse during the Windows installation process. This was a problem encountered on some Skylake motherboards too.

GIGABYTE had a utility that modifies the Windows 7 ISO to insert USB 3.0 driver support. You can also add NVMe driver support for M.2 NVMe SSDs if you choose to do so.

Windows releases hotfixes monthly for Windows 7 that makes the system more secure.

I never said there was no need for windows update.

Windows 7 will run on an i7-7700k but not being able to run windows updates prevents you from getting vital updates that keep the system secure.

Windows Xp on the other hand does not receive any new updates, besides Heartbleed which Microsoft did let them get.
