Vertical coolers vs horizontal cpu coolers

Are vertical coolers, (the ones that stand next to your cpu), or horizontal coolers, (coolers that are on top of your cpu and mobo better?)

Ex of vertical cooler: cooler master hyper 212 evo
Ex of horizontal cooler: Intel stock cooler

That depends on what you mean by "better".
Top down coolers, like the intel stock cooler, do a better job at cooling motherboard components (such as VRM modules).

Tower coolers generally are larger, and more surface area is a great thing for coolers. Most popular coolers are tower coolers, as top down coolers tend to lack surface area, and tend to run into other motherboard components if they get too large.

Generally, a tower cooler is going to be the best bet unless you have some specific need for a top down cooler.
