Monitor switches off when starting a game?

I've had my PC for about two years, never had any problems.

Since yesterday, suddenly my monitor switches off every time I try to start a game. Just the monitor.. the pc stays switched on, but I have to restart it.

I tried to peek inside the case and when the monitor switches off, there's nothing visibly wrong going on. The fans are still turning

I also tried to take out the gpu and use just the onboard gpu and the game loaded fine.. the monitor stayed on. Does this mean it's a gpu issue?

My specs are:

Intel - Core i5-4590 3.3GHz
ASRock - Fatal1ty H97 Killer ATX LGA1150
MSI - GeForce GTX 970 4GB
Corsair - RM 650W 80+ Gold

Thanks!

That psu is a good psu which shouldn't affect things like this. It has enough power, but the only way to test is try with another one.
Since saying you have another system at hand could you try the one from that one or when the other system is a single gpu system could you just switch psu's and see what happens.

Since working fine with the onboard gpu/igp does it seem to be gpu related. It doesn't switch off during normal pc usage? Only games you say ...

Do you have the latest drivers for it? Maybe even tried older ones ... Can use DDU to clear the old drivers or the "advanced option" when installing a new set of drivers and checking the "do a clean install" option.

Tried a different output if possible?
Tried a different cable as well? Just to test ...

Thanks for the reply.

What I actually tried was to replacing the card with a gtx 1070 from my other computer. After I installed all the drivers, to my surprise, the game didn't load! Instead, the fan on the gpu started whirring loudly (I think it was the fan on the gpu) and the monitor turned off again!

Do you think it could be the PSU?

I'm having almost the same issue - I also have the MSI - GeForce GTX 970 4GB Twin Frozr V Video Card. I would just add one thing: If i don't use the computer for games for a considerable period (2 weeks or so), it starts to work again. But after a few days, or hours, of heavy use, it starts to act up again. I have tried a DVI and a HDMI monitor, so i know it's not that at least.

I have 20 days left on my warranty for the graphics card. Any recommendations?
