4k 60hz GSync or 1440p 144hz Gsync to go with 1080ti / i7 4790k

I recently picked up an MSI GTX 1080ti Gaming X card. It's amazing, couldn't be happier with the performance thus far.

My main monitor is currently an Acer G257HU. It's a very solid 1440p monitor, but it's only 60 hz (though I know some people have OC it to 75 or so).

Here is my question - with this GPU, what would your setup be? Would you get a 4k gsync, even though those offerings are only 60hz at this time, or get a 1440p 144/165hz gsync?

I suppose I could wait until next year to get the upcoming 4k 144hz HDR monitors, but those are almost certainly going to be $1200-1500+

Medium 4K what bullshit. It's nice to inform someone about his choices and benefits on both sides but please don't lie to him. If you can max out 144fps at 1440p, you likely have over 60 fps at 4K. At 4K you can turn off antialiasing since you won't even see the benefit due to all the extra pixels that already does what AA does.

My previous comment was the real objective explanation. Either you like eye candy good looking graphics on a monitor 28 inch or bigger, or you like more fps. But since you never experienced 144 fps you should first try it out. Also that extra AA on some titles at 1440p might eat a bit more performance than just ramping it up to 4K without AA.

Witcher 3 maximum settings 4K I get 55+ fps, and it drops down to...

What do you prefer? Eye candy graphics or fast camera movement competitive games? Actually the extra fps might not even matter that much if you're used to 60 fps already.

I myself have 4K 60 fps gsync. On a monitor bigger than 28 inch you can really see a huge difference between 1440p and 4K. But also keep in mind even with your setup, you won't get Witcher 3 at 4K 60fps, very close but not 60 constant. While at 1440p you can get probably easily 100 fps.

Maybe go to a store that can show you a 144Hz monitor and see if it's what you've been missing all your life, otherwise 60fps is sweet.

I say go for the 1440p one. The 4K one will be nice and will be a direct upgrade to your current one. However, even the 1080ti will barely do 4K at 60fps with max settings. Also, I myself made the switch to 1440p 144hz g sync and I could never go back. It's buttery smooth and is such an upgrade from 60hz. with 4K, your GPU will only last for a year before you need to turn down some settings for 60fps. By about year 2-3, you will need a new GPU if you want to do anything above low settings.

Overall, get the 1440p one. Higher refresh rate makes a huge difference. And I would take maxed out 1440p over medium on 4K, especially since it will last much longer.

Witcher 3 maximum settings 4K I get 55+ fps, and it drops down to constant 45 values in the forests out of Touissant. The only game I can't really max out at 4K and enjoy smooth gameplay is ARK since it's really poorly optimized. And having 4K allows you the option to go for 1440p while the other doesn't. And in future games if you won't be able to max out 4K 60 fps, you surely won't get more than 100 fps at 1440p with AA on.

The question is really this: do you want more than 60 fps or not. But with that logic why not just stay with a 1080p and rock 200 fps until the end of times.

I didn't say maxing out fps on 1440 you will get about 100ish. And that's still a huge difference from 60. And the difference you see from 60-100 is a lot more than from there to 144.

And adjusting how much AA will make a big difference. MSAA x8 will make a visual difference while being a lot less gpu intensive. Even then it's debatable if you need x8 with 1440, but it willstill leave you with good fps. You are also wrong about using 4k for 1440p. Yes you technically can, but it will look like shit because the aspect ratio is not even. That's why people do 4k to 1080p and 5k to 1440. Otherwise it causes blurring and distortion.
