General FPS / Performance Issue

I'm having a seemingly generic issue with my system across a variety of different games that I'm having a tough time diagnosing, so I was hoping someone could help me narrow this down.

First, my system:

AMD FX 8350
Nvidia GTX 1060 (6gb)
MSI 970 Gaming Motherboard
8gb RAM (single channel)

The issue is that during these games, I will get random FPS "lag" when turning and looking in certain directions - the trend seems to be open-world games, but isn't only exclusive to that.

in some games, such as The Division, I'm able to get a sold 60 FPS after lowering some settings - this is fine, and expected behavior I would imagine.

In some games however (such as Far Cry 4), this terrible issue doesn't ever truly go away, no matter what settings I drop.

Other than getting rid of the issue, my other problem here is that surely (using Far Cry 4 as an example), the system listed above should be able to run this on Ultra without issues?

Please feel free to request anything else from me that may help diagnose this issue - I'm aware that I haven't really explained it very well, so please do bare with me (it's a difficult one to describe).

=================================================

Here is a list of games I've had issues with:

Fallout 4
This game has problems, but I still have the FPS drops in towns even after lowering shadows.

Far Cry 4
This issue only comes when travelling fast or in certain locations, but is still weird.

Sherlock Holmes and the Devils Daughter
I mean...seriously? This game looks like crap, and yet looking down the street dips me to 40fps.

Lords of the Fallen
No matter the graphics settings (Ultra or Low), I get 60fps for the most part but weird dips to 40/50fps when looking at certain things.

There are others, but I can't remember right now...I can always update this list later.

=================================================

Games I've had to lower the graphics for that I feel maybe I shouldn't have had to:

The Division
Runs at 60fps which is fine, but had to lower a few things.

Assassins Creed Syndicate
Doesn't hit 50fps, but doesn't look as twitchy as the rest.

The Witcher 3
Runs at 60fps most of the time, but has the same issue as Far Cry 4 sometimes when moving fast, and especially when in towns

Homefront: The Revolution
I can get this to run (for the most part) at 60fps and it looks very nice, but has the same issue as the others when the graphics are cranked up. Weird laggy twittchyness when looking in certain directions.

=================================================

On top of all of this, the other issue I have is that running at anything lower than 60fps (and I mean, ANYTHING) feels horrible...twitchy, laggy...like it's literally streaming to the TV and a far slower rate than my screen can manage (and I guess that IS what's happening, but it doesn't feel like this on the PS4 for example at 30fps) and so the image seems to jump constantly.

So...is there an issue with this system somewhere, or is simply the case that I expect it to be able to run better than it actually can? If so, what is letting it down?

Would the RAM really make that much difference? I read a few articles where they had performed tests, and in most cases the single channel RAM actually performed better than dual.

The reason it's single channel FYI is simply because of the cooler I got - its so big I cannot fit my RAM in slots 1 or 2 (because they are also stupid high profile ones). At some point I wish to upgrade to 16gig (and also probably get 18k instead of 13k that I have now), but the only game I know of that "requires" 16gb of RAM at the moment is Deus Ex, so I haven't really bothered.

So the likely issue is the CPU then? I picked it simply because it's the CPU all games are using as their recommended one at present,
which made me think that SURELY it's good enough?

Basically, if I meet the recommended specs I would expect not to encounter issues really... *sigh*

Yes the CPU can run the games, but due to the CPU you are also not getting smooth framerates. If you are at 60 then at 20, your average is 40, but it will not feel as smooth as if you were at 40 the whole time. My son had a 6 core AMD CPU, he had maybe 120ish FPS in SCGO and it was not smooth. I changed his system to a dual core Intel i3-6300 and his FPS went up to 140 and was smooth, meaning the top and lower FPS were closer together.

Thanks for the answers - I was really hoping this wasn't the case, as I've only recently (within a year) updated from an FX 4200 (or something I forget) to the FX 8350.

Oh well - looks like in a year or so I will be upgrading to an I7.

On that subject, what processor / motherboard combo is recommended? I feel I've had enough of AMD, so would love to move over to Intel (which I know NOTHING about...).

An i7 is not needed to match a 1060 or even a 1070 card unless you do lots of video rendering and don't like waiting. In a year there may be a new range of CPUs, so you should look into things then.

I do a lot of music editing however, but I don't find that there are any issues on that front!

It's a shame there is no high spec AM3+processor, as upgrading the motherboard was part and parcel with getting the new processor.

I'm really not sure... I've tried to monitor usage while in game but for some reason the overlay has stopped working. I do know that neither the cpu nor gpu are getting even over 60% when the stuttering and fps drops happen, but what kind of speed should I be seeing?

And again, using Far Cry 4 as an example, it's not even all the time. In some location I get weird fps drops when looking in certain directions, and while driving it lags quite a bit.

I managed to get the overlay back on (apparently it was disabled by a key shortcut), but as you will see from these two screenshots there doesn't appear to be any difference in the numbers:

60 FPS

40 FPS (literally turning around in the same area)

Unfortunately, it doesn't monitor the speed but my CPU runs at 4mhz as far as I can tell.

Msi afterburner is what I was using to get the overlay... Doesn't have anything to monitor the actual cpu speed that I can see?

If it is throttling, what could cause that and is it fixable?

I don't think it's an overheating issue as the fps drops seem specific to certain things, like looking at certain objects or in certain directions etc.

The motherboard is also pretty new... Not even a year old.

I'm convinced something else is going on, but I just don't know what

OK, I've run some benchmarks in the hope this helps.

Here was my Farcry 4 Gameplay - I was fiddling with the graphics settings at the end, hence why the GPU was going up and down a lot (in and out of menus)

This was Farcry Primal - this started out with some FPS drops, but I lowered the settings and then seemed to work OK:

I hope you can see these HTML files, and I also really hope they help to someone who knows what they are looking at - to me, they don't mean that much :)

Has anyone got any thoughts?

On the one hand, my RAM is fairly slow and Single Channel - so I would like to buy faster RAM (and lower profile) so I can go up to 16gb of faster RAM. If knowing that upgrading to the faster RAM would resolve the issue, then I'd do it immediately...but I'm not even sure how to find that out from the stats I posted.

BUT

If that isn't going to do anything whatsoever, I don't want to pour more money into a system that I will be replacing...if I don't have too, I would like to stick withe FX 8350 for now. However, if I knew for a fact the issue was my CPU, then I'd look at upgrading to the Ryzen 5 sometime next year (which means a new motherboard, new ram AND new processor).

As a side note: I've noticed the issues do seem to be uniquely to games like Far Cry 4 where you are travelling in vehicles at fast speeds (except for the sections in that game where I'm looking at certain things and the frames drop, which is completely strange).

Lastly, I'm thinking of formatting; but I've got a LOT of stuff on there (like Sonar and VSTs etc) which I would have to completely reinstall, and if it's not going to help then it's a complete pain to have to go through that...but I'm really not sure what else to do at this point :(
