Windows 8.1: Network fine on laptop but fails to connect on desktop - says incorrect security key or requests a user/pass

I'm having issues attempting to connect to my wifi network using my desktop. My laptop and mobile connect fine but although the network is visible on my desktop, attempting to connect ends in one of three ways:

1. Just says failed to connect
2. Says incorrect security key
3. Requests username and password (I've tried the SSID and key, and my account name and pass, to no avail. It then says failed to connect).

I've noticed the wireless icon temporarily gets a red cross over it when trying to connect (like the network adapter has momentarily switched itself off).

Thanks in advance!

Solution
1. What is the OS on the desktop ?
2. What are you trying to do with it. Accessing the Internet is much easier than accessing the files or the printer on another system on the same network.
