I recently did a fresh install onto a new harddrive because the old hard drives operating system crashed. Now I want to grab some files off the old one but I have to plug it in when the computers already on and loaded, I cant leave it plugged in when I shut down or turn on computer.

Solution
You still have the bootloader info from that drive setup, and the drive most likely still contains partition information indicating it is active system. You will need to set the old drive as not the system drive
