i have recently brought a 24 inch 144 hz 1080p aoc moniter as it was on sale at my local currys pc would but my cpu which is a 4460 i5 is a bottle necking to my gpu which is a gtx 1080 I have been thinking on upgrading and thought this would be a good time to but im unsure which route to go down amd or intel as I stream from time to time when I get a chance but generally im not sure what one would quiet suiet my needs for 144hz gaming and streaming. and should i consider the 7700k ?

Try to find a good-priced (or used) i7-4790 (or an i7-4790K if you are using an OC-able mobo). Update your mobo to latest BIOS supporting such Haswell-Refresh/Devil's Canyon CPUs.

This will alleviate hindrances in CPU-intensive applications and games you are experiencing in your setup.

It will also save you a lot of cost and hassle if you are to replace your CPU with a different platform (which necessitates new CPU, new MB, new RAM, re-installing all drivers, OS, etc., and disassembling/assembling your components in your case).

The GTX 1080 is a great pairing with your 1080p/144Hz monitor.

I have never considered or known anyone to consider CPU for 144 hz. That being said, for gaming PCs, wouldn't consider anything less than a i5 k series processor.

The 1080 is well more than enough for 1080p at any refresh rate. The main purpose of 144 Hz is not to have every game up near 144 hz but staying above 60 and the ability to use ULMB (G-Sync only)

Is that only when you're streaming?
If not, then I would concur on the purchase of an I7 haswell chip, any of which will serve your needs nicely, as would an e3 xeon. While the haswell chips aren't the current(obviously), they still pack a lot of power. I wouldn't upgrade to a new chipset yet, if it were me(I'm still using Haswell myself, I'm going to build new in about 3 more years, the mid-life graphics update is due this fall).

Point is, you can still maximize your current platform's full potential (instead of overhauling your platform) as you just have a relatively weak CPU paired with a very powerful GPU. Hence, the suggested i7-4790 or i7-4790K CPU -- which is all you need to get for your current Intel 4th-gen Haswell platform.

The i7's have higher clock speeds and multi-threaded (4-core/8-thread) which is a considerable/significant upgrade from your 4-core/4-thread i5-4460, considering your PC usage.

The i7-7700K, which will cost a LOT (since you will be needing a new Z270 MB, DDR4 RAM, OS, aftermarket cooler) is not as much of an upgrade relative to an i7-4790K when used on your current rig.

no not really I can pick up a 7700k bundle for just about £ 495 from Amazon and it's clocked to 5 hz where as a new 4790k is about £380 to £420 her which is crazy and used I've had bad experiences before with being sold fault or dead cups.
