is it safe to put stuff on top of echo dot?

The echo dot does not have a speaker, that is why it is cheaper then the full echo.
Not sure if the holes are for venting or for the microphones. Either way if the factory took the extra time and cost to have the holes cut out of the casing there is a reason for it.
Best case scenario you are making it less effective due to reducing its ability to hear or blocking bluetooth signal, worst case scenario you are trapping heat in the device.

the echo dot does have a speacker , just not as good as on the full echo . held the echo dot next to my ear and it sounded like it was coming from the bottom slits. so the top slits probably is for venting . thank you for your time .
