I just put a pc together, I installed windows and then started installing all the drivers for the parts I have. However when I got to the nvidia driver, it alt-tabbed to the desktop during the middle of the installation. At that point I couldn't see my mouse cursor. If I tried alt-tabbing, the icon lit up on the taskbar but nothing appeared on the screen. I waited 30 minutes for a response then restarted, but windows wouldn't start and I had to reinstall/ I'm not sure what to do regarding the driver, I picked the latest one for my gpu (gtx 960). Driver version is 385.41 with the link here: https://www.geforce.com/drivers/results/123227

Alright well first of all while your troubleshooting rather than having to reinstall windows every time you can remove the drivers instead
Boot in safemode with networking
Open command prompt and type in:
REG ADD...

Ok so strangely enough, after my screen went black, my second monitor was finally recognized. I have a ryzen cpu so the second monitor is connected to the graphics card, it had no signal at all until the black screen. The second monitor is still black though. Also the cursor now appeard on the main monitor but nothing else appears. It also disappears when going into the second monitor.

Could it just be that I have a faulty graphic card? It's a refurbished gtx 960 from newegg

Boot in safemode with networking
Open command prompt and type in:
REG ADD "HKLM\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\SafeBoot\Network\MSIServer" /VE /T REG_SZ /F /D "Service"
Hit enter and then:
net start msiserver
Then go online and download DDU, install and remove the drivers

It's possible the gc is fault but there's a few things worth checking first. Try using a different connection from the pc to monitor, if your using HDMI then try with a displayport or DVI also just use one monitor.

So it appears that installing any nvidia driver causes the unresponsive screen (black screen after rebooting, can't log in to my account), and then removing the drivers with ddu in safe mode makes it usable again.

The weird thing is that my second monitor is definitely registered by the pc after installing drivers but neither screens can display anything, but when I uninstall drivers I can use my first monitor normally but the second monitor doesn't exist at all to the pc

Any ideas on how to proceed?

Edit: Interestingly I had to get my driver through windows update for my gpu to be recognized and work correctly, everything is good now. Safe mode and DDU was definitely helpful in speeding up the process of getting working drivers, thanks
