Gaming/Graphics Motherboard - Server Desktop (Intel-S5000PSL)

I need a cost effective setup for 3D graphics, and some light gaming. Mostly eSports games, with the usual FPS here or there.

Software: Adobe Packages, Maxon Cinema4D, ZBrush
Games: CSGO, FPS Titles, DirectX9-11 Mainly

Would this setup work:


  • MOBO: Intel-S5000PSL SPECS PIC
    CPU: Xeon L5320 + Xeon L5320 SPECS
    RAM: 32GB DDR2 ECC PC-5300
    GFX: GT 730 2GB GDDR5 Low Profile SPECS PIC
    POWER: XPS-550W-SEW
    CASE: Standard ATX

If the above setup would work, does anyone have any suggestions on cost effective cooling. I've considered an AIO liquid cooler setup, like 2 Corsair H55's PIC one for each CPU, but that's pushing the price range a little. What heat sink / fan combo would fit?

On the other hand, do you have a more cost effect setup? I would like to keep the build under £300 (GBP).

The 2 LGA 1366 Xeons won't stand up to Ryzen 5 at all; Ryzen is 3x the lithography technology (14nm vs 45nm) along with new AVX and even AES instructions which is only found with products newer than LGA 1366 CPUs.

Maybe this? This is basically a $2000 rig roughly 4 years ago.

If you're using 2 CPUs to get 8 threads you should just buy a new CPU with much better IPC.
But above setup works.

Thanks for the suggestion. That's not even half a computer, and it's reached the maximum budget :/ not exactly what I was asking about. I was trying to get a full working machine built for the budget, although in an ideal world that mobo, cpu + cooler would go nicely in most systems.


Thank you, I wont be requiring support. I think there is probably 100+ more OS that could run on that board asides from the official supported ones. I was intending on running Qubes OS.

Hmm... Is it not possible to build a PC for less than £300 able to achieve 120fps in DirectX9-11 games, while still getting a half decent Cinebench score (for use with Maxon Cinema 4D)?

Sorry, I thought you meant just the CPU and motherboard.

If you can find some 5500 series Xeons maybe you could reach 120 FPS. Core-based Xeons are pretty weak for IPCs in today's terms. Also, no way you can get anywhere close to 120 FPS in any game with a GT730.

Thanks for the reply. I've been going over your recommendations and they seem to fit my requirements quite well. Some of your comments have got me thinking about the best price/performance.

What are your thoughts on performance between the first setup you mentioned and this second setup? Will the 2 Xeon's stand up along side the Ryzen 5?

I'm currently on a single Xeon X3220, 7GB DDR2, 550w PSU, GT730 (Barely reaches 120fps) on a HP Motherboard. It's no where near an ideal setup.

If I was to push the budget up to £400 what would be the most ideal setup?

Comes out to exactly $400. Unfortunately, LGA 2011 CPUs are still very expensive so I wasn't able to find a cheap 6 core, so I had no leftover price for GPU. But this will perform very well.
