Hi there guys.

In our building we have a modem. To that modem there is a router connected to it, and to the router a switch. I have connected another router to the switch, and into it I have inserted our 3 PC's from the same floor and our printer(the printer has network card). My question is how can I make a network, so that only us (the 3 PC's) can see each other, share and copy files between each other and use our printer, but in the same time to still receive internet from the modem.

Thank you a lot.

If you plug the switch into the WAN port of your new router, then anyone plugged into your new router will be on a separate subnet, and isolated from all the other equipment you described. You will still get Internet via the WAN port, but traffic between your new router's WAN port to its LAN ports will be firewalled. Computers on your new router's network will be able to see computers on the other network, but not vice versa. Connections between the two networks (e.g. file sharing) may or may not work depending on if the protocols need port forwarding through the firewall.

If you plug the switch into a LAN port on your new router, then anyone plugged into your new router will be on the same network as all the other equipment you described. You will still get Internet, but computers connected to your new router can see and connect to computers on the rest of the network. However, to make this work, you MUST turn off the DHCP server on the new router. A network will not function properly if there are 2 or more DHCP servers. This configuration is commonly used when you simply wish to use the new router to add a new WiFi access point to the network.

Is this some kind of networking question you have to answer for CompTIA or something?

This setup is possible but requires lots of configuring on both routers.

Plug router2 in to the switch using the WAN port. When you plug the 3 computers in to router2 via the LAN ports, those 3 computer will not be able to "see" anything on the first router and vice versa. However like I said there are configurations you have to do to get the internet working for stuff on router2.
