Use older router as access point?

Currently I have a WiFi Range extender as a sort of access point and then an Ethernet cable from the extender to my computer.

My current router is an Asus RT-AC68U, and I have an older (1 or 2 years) Netgear router set at 600mbps. My current router is in the dining room which is about 150 feet away from my room/computer. How would I turn the netgear router into an access point to get better internet in my room?

Solution
An access point assumes a wired connection back to the primary router. You need either an ethernet cable or powerline network adapters to create a wired network back to the primary router.
