First PC build

Hello Guys,

I ordered myself some parts to build my own pc.

It's the first time for me so i had some questions.

I would like to know what kind of settings i should use best in my Bios/uefi for overclocking with my build.

I was hoping you guys could shed some light on this situation.

These are the parts that i'm working with :

MOBO: MSI Z270 GAMING M7
CPU: Intel Core i7 7700K
GPU: MSI GeForce GTX 1080 GAMING X 8G
RAM: Corsair DDR4 Dominator Platinum 2x8GB 2400
SSD: Samsung 960 EVO 250GB
HDD: Toshiba 3TB
Power supply : be quiet! Power Zone 850W
Fan: Cooler Master Hyper TX3 Evo
Case: Corsair Crystal 570X RGB

What CPU cooler did you order?

And I would run that Dominator RAM at 3200MHz. Let the mobo set auto timings for dram.

I got the Cooler Master Hyper TX3 Evo, there are also 3 extra fans in the case.

A few of my recommendations:

Cryorig H7 = Minimum, no overclocking.

Cryorig H5 = Better, light overclocking.

Noctua NH-D15 = Better, more overclocking.

NZXT Kraken X62 = my personal preference for liquid cooling (RGB

), even better for overlcocking. There are various other Corsair coolers that are basically the same for less cost. There are also other, supposedly better liquid coolers. I'm not familiar with them.

50-100 euro's then ? This one was pretty cheap i have to say.

Couldn't i use it for a small period so i didn't buy it for nothing or will it cause damage to my pc ?

You could try it out and see. You'd likely have to lower the voltage and possibly disable turbo boost if temps get too high under load.

Oh okay thanks for your help man !

So i'll best wait with overclocking untill i have the Noctua cooler ?

And how exactly do i overclock the RAM to 3200Mhz ?

This my first time really building my own pc.

But i don't know everything yet especially about the bios and overclocking settings.

I really appreciate your help !

If you don't want to spend that much, you can do like I did and buy the Scythe Fuma. It's good for 4.7GHz. But I think the Cryorig H5 would be about the same performance. PCPartPicker part list / Price breakdown by merchant

Overclocking RAM is done in the BIOS. I have an MSI Z270M Mortar board and it allows me to set the dram speed to 3200MHz leaving the timings on auto. It (presumably) selects the best timings to allow the memory to run at that speed.

I say all of this because it was shown with the 7600K (& presumably the 7700K) to improve performance more with higher speed RAM than overclocking the CPU. Start watching @02:45 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gYb0y8LNAVI&t=361s

Very interesting !

So will it be necesary for me to overclock my CPU i'm gonna use the pc mainly for gaming.

Or do i only need to overclock my RAM or both ?

And will the Scythe get the job done if my ram & cpu would be overclocked ?

I almost ordered the Noctua already lol

Well, I just bought the Scythe about a week ago, and I'm a little disappointed. I thought it would allow at least 4.8GHz, but it reached 90C under load at 4.8GHz. I'd really recommend the Noctua if you want to overclock.

My personal opinion, overclocking the 7700K isn't necessary, at least not yet.

The interesting thing about PC gaming is all systems are different. I've never used Corsair's Dominator RAM. It has ridiculously low timings, which is a good thing. If it were me I'd run some benchmarks during gameplay, or just pick a game that has a benchmark feature, and test the RAM at stock 2400MHz (simply enable XMP in BIOS, it could default to 2133MHz) and then test the RAM at 3200MHz. See how big the difference is if any at all.

Hmm okay that's good to know.

And yeah i came across a gaming build guide for my M7 motherboard (which arrives tomorrow + the power supply i already have the rest ) and it said the dominator platinum would go really well with this specific setup. That's what i did basically i copied the build guide except for the cooler

i didn't think it would really matter that much.

I'm ordering the Noctua right now !

But I do believe you'll need a better cooler either way, and might as well get the best now so you don't have to buy a better one later when you want to max out your overclock.
