Won't post with PCIe SSD plugged in

Just finished a build using:

ASRock AB350 Pro4
WD Black PCIe (NVMe) SSD

According to the motherboard manual, there are two sockets as follows:

• 1 x Ultra M.2 Socket (M2_1), supports type 2242/2260/2280 M.2 PCI Express module up to Gen3 x4 (32 Gb/s) (with Ryzen CPU) or Gen3 x2 (16 Gb/s) (with A-Series APU)

• 1 x M.2 Socket (M2_2), supports type 2230/2242/2260/2280 M.2 SATA3 6.0 Gb/s module

I'm using M2_1, since this is supposed to be a PCIe module.

Without the SSD plugged in, it posts fine and goes right into the BIOS.

With the SSD plugged in, it turns on, fans spin up, but it does not post. Nothing is displayed on the screen, and the monitor goes into powersave mode. The keyboard and mouse do light up, which is when the monitor usually comes on with the post. But with the SSD plugged in, the monitor never comes on.

The only thing I can think of is that the SSD is bad. When I first set it up, I accidentally put into the M2_2 (second) M.2 socket, which is for SATA3. Could I have ruined the SSD by doing that, which subsequently is causing it to not post? FWIW, when I did have it plugged into M2_2, it did boot to the BIOS, but the module was not detected.

Other thoughts about why it won't post at all?

Thanks.

Solution
OK. Solved.

I realized it was actually booting, but nothing was showing on the screen via HDMI or DVI. I could tell it was booting, because the ethernet lights were flashing and the light was on the keyboard and mouse.

So, I googled for problems with graphics not working when PCIe SSD is inserted, and one post suggested changing PCI slots for the graphics card.

I tried this and booted with HDMI, and it did post but then showed a black screen with one white dot.

So, I used DVI, and it booted right up. I installed windows on the SSD and then was able to boot via HDMI.

So, strange problem. But now solved. Thanks.
