How to compare two HDDs performance on paper?

My ASUS laptop's HDD was making noise so I sent it for replacement to service centre but the new HDD seems slower.

Old HDD: Seagate ST1000LM035-1RK172 New one: HGST HTS541010A9E680

Old one had 128 MB cache with areal density 1Tbit/sq.in and new one has only 8 MB with areal density 694Gbit/sq.in? Which one is better? What other parameters to consider? Laptop is still under warranty

I don't have the Seagate HDD but done the following test on the same HDD in a different machine (little lower specs) and the HGST on my current machine. benchmark done using Passmark's performance test software.

Laptop drives are optimized for battery savings, not performance. Your new one is 5400 rpm.
I think the old one was also.

If you value performance see if you can't afford a ssd.
It makes all the difference in the world to a laptop.

Failing that, look for a hdd with a 7200 rpm drive.
The lower latency helps most windows functions.
There is an argument for a ssd/hdd drive which is a hdd with a fast ssd cache.

is there any difference like aeral density, seek rate etc. between them. I am unable to understand those terms.

the laptop is under warranty and the replacement was done by an authorized service centre.
both have same rpm but with huge cache difference. but I am not able to understand how to compare the performance difference between them based on other specs other than cache.

 
Cache is solid state.
Any data residing in cache will be 40x faster than data residing on the hard platter.
Cache effectiveness is dependent on what you are doing and how well the cache can hold your data.
In your case, I suspect that the difference in cache is a big part of the difference.
I would have the service center replace with an equivalent performing drive.

Aerial density is how many bits can be held on a track of the hdd. The higher the density, the more data that can be transferred in one revolution. The higher the density, the higher the sequential transfer rate.

Seek rate is the measure of how long it takes the access arm to move to the proper track. It is faster with a 7200 rpm drive than a 5400 rpm drive.


 
The only way to say for sure how they performed in comparison would be to have both drives tested in the same system in some sort of benchmarking application, which would obviously require having both drives on-hand and working. If you wanted any further information about the specs of the mentioned model of Seagate drive, here is the spec sheet. Seems like you may have already taken a look, but just wanted to make sure you knew where to find it.

I searched and found ST1000LM035-1RK172 has areal density:- 1 Tbit/sq.in. and internal data rate:- 100MBps whereas HTS541010A9E680 has 694 Gbit/sq.in. and internal data rate:-125MBps.
I agree we have to benchmark it in same laptop, but I didn't expect service centre would replace it with some other hdd .
though internal data looks lesser compared to hgst ? 100MBps is it correct?
