Hello everybody,

i'm writing here since i'm out of ideas for my PC freezing problems and because my search for an answer hasn't yield any results. Also, english is my second language so please bear with me.

Here's my build's specs:

- Intel Core i5 6600K
- Asus Z170-A ATX LGA1151 Motherboard
- be quiet! - Dark Rock Pro 3 67.8 CFM Fluid Dynamic Bearing CPU Cooler
- Corsair - Vengeance LPX 16GB (2 x 8GB) DDR4-3000 Memory
- Asus ROG STRIX-GTX1070-O8G-GAMING
- EVGA - SuperNOVA G2 650W 80+ Gold Certified Fully-Modular ATX Power Supply
- Crucial - MX300 750GB 2.5" SSD
- 2X Western Digital - Caviar Blue 1TB 3.5" 7200RPM HDD

I play in WQHD (2560 x 1440)

EVERYTHING IS STOCK - NO OVERCLOCKING WHATSOEVER

I bought and assembled the parts in december 2016. I played regularly in the beginning and everything was running smooth. I started gaming less and less as summer approached. I played Rocket league in june (after a month of inactivity) and after maybe 45 minutes, the game freezed. There was no sound, the game locked on screen and not peripherals were responding (keyboard, mouse, etc...). The only button responding was the power on the front of the case (the reset one wasn't even working). So i hard reset my PC and restarted Rocket league since i was thinking it was just a one time thing. Fifteen minutes in, another lock up. You see where i'm going with this...

So the next day i started investigating what could cause the pc to freeze. It always happened in games (Rocket league, Witcher 3, Dirt rally, Sniper elite 4, etc...) and play time doesn't seem to contribute to a pattern. It can freeze after 10 minutes or 30 minutes. There's no event or log in windows that can point to something causing the freeze.

I monitored my temps and tried passes on FurMark. Everything was fine and within threshold. Memtest also ran clean and i tried a quick test in Prime95 and everything seemed fine (i didn't test that long in Prime).

I then tried to see if it was anything to do with drivers. So i used DDU to uninstall them and try to rollback before june 2017. It was still freezing. I tried to monitor my temps (gpu and cpu) while playing witcher 3 but the screen lock and i can't do anything to retrieve the temps.

I delete any audio drivers (Nvidia HD, Realtek) to see if it could cause the freeze but it didn't change a thing.

I then tried Driver verifier within windows to isolate each driver and see what could cause the freeze. Still freezing.

i did clean installs of windows several times. Still freezing.

I retried FurMark and it froze while testing. I then thought it was the gpu going bad.

I then tried to see if the gpu was bad by having a friend test it on his computer. He played several hours on ultra and didn't have any issues. I tested his GPU on my pc, a GTX 960 and i played games on high without problem in WQHD resolution. The GPU don't seem to be the source of freezing since it ran well on my friend's computer.

So here i am today....i'm a bit helpless since i tried what i could think of as a source of freezing but now i don't know what to do. I thought maybe i should clean install windows but disable updates to see if the latest windows updates could be the problem but i don't know if it really is a potential source of problem.

Does anybody have an idea about what to do or test because i finally bought a pc with the specs i wanted and it sits there because i can't find a way to enjoy it. It's so frustrating to not be able to find the cause of all of this.

Feel free to ask anything that could help you help me! Thanks a lot for your time!

Solution
You have the latest bios? "Version 3504 from 2017/08/11"
You have XMP enabled in the bios so ram is working at rated speed, timings and voltage?

As Vic 40 suggested, i just updated the Bios and everything seems fine. I was able to play more than 2 hours without a freeze so as of today, it seems like the right solution. I tought about updating the bios as i was searching for a solution but i discarded the idea since everything pointed toward the GPU. Thanks for the help Vic!
