I used my WD Passport on my mac years ago but now I need to move all those files (a few GBs) from my external drive to my Windows PC and everytime I try to copy these files out, it gives me this error -36.
Finder can’t complete the operation because some data in '_DS.Store' can't be read

I have tried deleting the DS.store files - that hasn't worked. Please suggest something else!!

You may want to try using carbon copy cloner, a free program for copying files. It could be that some of the transfer issues are because Apple using different file naming conventions that don't always work so well within a Windows environment. So, you just need a copy program that will keep going, ignoring the files with formatting errors, such as _DS.Store, which is definitely not deeded.

A few lead up questions:

1. Am I correct in assuming that the Passport is formatted HFS+?
2. What are you using to copy the files?
3. In which environment are you using to try to copy?
4. Are you sure that your Passport is not damaged?

1. Am I correct in assuming that the Passport is formatted HFS+? -- I'm not sure what this means (I'm really not that tech-savvy), but it was formatted the very first time for use on my macbook, so I think yes?
2. What are you using to copy the files? -- I used to just be able to copy paste from folder to folder while on my mac. At this point, I tried doing the same. I connected over the network to my windows PC and started moving files to a shared drive. Some moved, some didn't, and most all the time, there was that error that would pop up.
3. In which environment are you using to try to copy? -- I am trying to move all the files over to my Windows PC (eventually to an external hard drive that is compatible with this PC)
4. Are you sure that your Passport is not damaged? -- I don't believe so, but how can I tell? I am able to open and use some of the many files I have attempted to open.

Thank you

Find a friend with a MAC and see if their machine can read it. Then you'll know the drive is working. Perhaps that same friend can read the files, reformat the drive to something that MAC and Windows can use (exFat) and put the files back on.
