HDD not detected do i need to format the drive ?

I have a seagate st1000dm003 a 1tb hdd my friend gave it to me to test if it works well i tried it and after that pc boots slow and i enter bios press f2 and bios detected the hdd and sometimes it dosent detect the hdd,after detecting it pc boots very slow and i just wait after 5mins waiting to get to the windows and i cant see the hdd on my pc and tried doing disk management, do ineed to format the drive or the drive is just borken ??

Mobo:asrock 880gm-le fx
GPU:GTX 560ti
RAM:2GB
Hdd:hitachi 160gb sata,
Samsung Spinpoint SP4002H
PSU:600 WATTS
 
Solution
Run Seagate's diagnostic software on the drive.

Verify that all connecting cables are securely in place. Replace with known working cables if possible.

And a reformat might work. The presumption being that the drive is somehow corrupted....
