Hey guys.

I built a computer out of used parts, and im having trouble getting it up and running. I will list the components and then explain the situation a little further.

PSU - Rosewill 8500BTX 500w
CPU - Phenom II x4 955
MoBo - MSI 880GM e41
RAM - 2x2 1333 G.Skill
HDD - 500GB Seagate ST3500 418AS 7200rpm
Case - Rosewill FBM-01
GPU - waiting on a GTX 750ti in the mail

So everything is plugged in in the right place except my CD/DVD reader/writer which is mounted, but unplugged because i need an adapter... Also, there is no external GPU yet because im waiting on 750ti in the mail. I have everything else, and i want to get a version of windows installed while i wait for GPU to arrive.

I have a VGA connecting the MoBo and an old Insignia 1600x900 monitor. I was expecting the onboard ATI Radeon HD 4250 to take over so i could do whats necessary. heres what happens...

So i plug it in, switch it on, and press the Power button on the Case. CPU fan spins up, and a blue LED right next to the DIMM slots turns on. However, neither of the case fans turn on. Also, the LEDs on the front of the case dont light up. If the LED+/-, HDD LED, Pwr SW, and those things were plugged in the wrong place i would expect the machine to not even power on. Does this sound like a partially fried MoBo? Is that possible? Could the onboard graphics card be disabled?

Haaaalp!! thanks everyone :) also, i already popped the cell battery out and put it back in to try and reset the MoBo.

Solution

That is incorrect as the AM3 has no APU. The AMD 880G has the HD 4250. The chipset is AMD® 880G+SB710 in the first link. The second link shows the 880G has the HD 4250. The 3rd link show all the CPU support with no APU.

Try using a HDMI cable to make sure the vga port isn't damaged.

It's possible that that mobo has an original bios, which may not support the 955. Later bios revisions show it is compatible, but I can't find the original listing, it doesn't exist anymore, it's all updated material. If that's the case, you'll need to get a really basic compatible cpu, temporarily, that'll probably be recognised, update the bios, and then swap back.
