6-8K editing system for motion graphics artist?

Hello friends! Below is the copy and pasted form for requesting PC build advice so....here you go:

Why Are You Upgrading: I am a full time visual artist and I use After Effects and Premiere to create “cut out” style 3d animations. I have a computer that was built for me back in 2012 and its served me well but is starting to show its age. I’d like to upgrade to a new system designed for motion graphics in After Effects at 6 or even 8K.

Approximate Purchase Date: Within the next two months

Budget Range: I’d love to be at or under 2K. A bit higher is alright, but under 2.5 to be sure.

System Usage: Only motion graphics and video editing work. No gaming, no movie watching, etc.

Are you buying a monitor: No

Parts to Upgrade: I’d like to upgrade everything, essentially a wholly new computer.

However, I do have a Corsair H100i GTX liquid cooling system and a Corsair TX850 power supply that I’d like to re-use if that seems feasible.

Do you need to buy OS: No

Preferred Website(s) for Parts: Amazon, b/c I have Prime. But if there is a good reason to go somewhere else, I’m all for that.

Location: Columbus, Ohio, USA

Parts Preferences: I’d like to use AMD’s new Ryzen CPUs....not sure which of them to go with though.....ie, not sure if the Threadrippers are really something I need or not.

Overclocking: I have no idea how to do this.

SLI or Crossfire: ??

Your Monitor Resolution: 1920 x 1080 - I have two LG flatron screens that I plan to reuse.

Additional Comments: I’d like lots of RAM (which, you probably assume) and lots of storage—however I don’t want solid state drives unless absolutely necessary.....due to price etc.

Also, The look of the case and loudness of the system mean nothing to me. It can look like a trash can and sound like an air conditioner for all I care :) I just want the ability to quickly, efficiently and coolly create multi-layered 3d motion graphics in AE and to edit and export 6k video from both AE and Premiere.

Your statement about NOT wanting solid state storage is foolish. For the price you are looking at you should have a couple TB of NVMe storage. I agree that you need other storage, and a backup strategy.

You should also be thinking ThreadRipper rather than Ryzen. I believe you should think Xeon Scaleable. It has more memory bandwidth than Threadripper.

Thanks Kanewolf. I suppose that was a bit over the top ;) — It just seems to me that SSD is so expensive and a HDD works just as well for my needs, so it seems. But, if there is a strong reason that SSD is better, I’m happy to go with it.

So you’d say Threadripper > Ryzen and Xeon > Threadripper for my needs, eh?

Yes. I would say Xeon Scaleable > Threadripper > Ryzen. All based on memory bandwidth. The Xeon Scaleable has 6 channel memory controller, ThreadRipper 4 channel and Ryzen 2 channel.

ThreadRipper has more PCIe and more cores than Ryzen. Xeon Scalable and ThreadRipper are similar in cores.

The reason SSD is better than HDD is bandwidth. Your problem is moving data -- Off disk, through the CPU and back to disk. NVMe SSD have 3000MB/s read speed. That is 5X the read performance of a SATA SSD and 15X the read speed of a mechanical HDD. That bandwidth equates to faster performance for you.

Your video card is going to be doing all the heavy lifting so a 16c Threadripper or 10core Xeon will do the trick. For hard drives all you need is Raid-0 for editing using a mechanical drive, 300-500MB/s is more than enough. 8K Red is only 30MB/s so even a single SSD drive is fast enough.

I think when people see crazy numbers like 6k and 8k they think it can't run on anything less than dual Xeons and 128GB of ram. But really it depends on what your doing. sounds like the op is doing 3d tracking in After Effects which is very GPU intense. You just need enough CPU power to feed the video cards because thats going to be the bottleneck. 3-4 years ago with AE CS5 it was a different story. But everyone should be using the Cloud (CC) or it's pointless to upgrade at all.

Edit: If it just Chroma key than you don't need anything special for that. One powerful video card is enough.

Thanks for all this work! Also, thanks for the info in your previous post....I guess I thought speed was entirely a CPU / RAM thing....I didn’t realize that the video card had such a large role to play as well.

Regarding the build you suggested, I noticed that you included a cooling option and power unit. Is this because you think that the Corsair H100 liquid cooler and TX850 power supply that I currently have will not be sufficient?

Oh, and lastly, Ohenry’s build has 4x 16 GB RAM, while yours only has 2x 16 GB....you don’t think more RAM would better serve my needs ? (Though, of course, I can always buy more after the fact if need be).

I just picked that cooler because it was cheaper and will cooler about the same. As for PSU I just picked a good brand. Corsair is good too. And as for the ram, I just figured you won't use more than 32GB for that sutff.
