Hi all,

I've been out of gaming for a while and my son has just started to get into it, so I said I build him a gaming PC. Amazon had a offer on recently and I picked up a GTX 950 2GB for £80. Tried to do a bit of research and it seemed to be a reasonable card. Seemed to out perform most cards priced around that range.

I know the latest is 1080 and when I compared the 950 to a 1050 there didn't seem a great deal of difference and they were £30 more at around the £110 mark. I can get a 1050ti 4gb for around £140 and this is considerably better.

I don't want to spend a great deal and got a limit of around £450 for motherboard, processor (i5-7400), ram (8gb), ssd (M2 PCIe 250gb) & gpu (GTX 950). I know I'm not going to get a great spec machine for this.

Will the GPU be ok for the latest games, or should I push for the 1050ti 4gb? Basically I don't want him saying after a few months, my GPU isn't good enough!!!

Thanks in advance,

Neil

The GTX 950 is a reasonable GPU, but there are much better and worse cards on the market. The good thing about GPU's is that you can lower graphics settings for games for better fps, but at one point the lower graphics become too hard to play at and an upgrade is needed. The GTX 950 is fine for games today with medium settings just make sure to get him a good CPU that can last the test of time, maybe push to the i5 7600k or i7s? What games is he interested in playing? I can tell you if they would benefit greatly from a 1080, otherwise I think he will enjoy his new build!

The 950 is entry level for gaming, you're correct in placing it with the 1050 in class. This is where gaming at 1080p is concerned. The main limitation is the 2gb vram. Some games will need to run at medium settings or lower at 1080p. You could get around this by running at something lower, like 720p, but then the game won't look as good.

I would try for the 1050 Ti if possible. Not only does it have more ram, which allows for higher settings, but it is faster too. So he'd get a nicer looking game that also runs better. Since you're pairing this with an i5 he could benefit from extra videocard performance. It depends on the games too. Something like Overwatch will run great on the 950, but he'll want more power for something like PUBG.

I'd recommend you get the 1050ti and even then you won't play let's say Witcher 3 at 60fps ultra settings but you'll be close. Or you could get a 470 if it's cheaper. I really can't recommend a 950 since the 1050ti can almost double your performance and it's a newer model and usually cheaper. Look on other websites.

Thanks. He’s wants to play PlayerUnknown's Battlegrounds. He has an xbox, but I’m sure he’ll realise pc gaming is much better. I’m sure he’ll want to play games like over watch and CoD WW2. Cheers
