I have an AM3 motherboard (MSI 870A-G46) and I plan on using it for nothing more than Word and web browsing so i don't need any kind of powerful graphics, but I noticed that the motherboard has a VGA port, but when doing some research it doesn't seem like the motherboard / chipset itself has integrated graphics, so it seemed to me that there must be APUs that fit in the socket, but I can't find any. Do these APUs exist or does the motherboard have integrated graphics that just aren't listed anywhere, or is the VGA port on the motherboard completely useless?

No. But some of the AM2+ motherboards did include a graphics chip on the motherboard. The 760G motherboards had graphics on the motherboard. A quick look at the back panel connectors will show you.

The motherboard you have, doesn't have a VGA port, it has a serial port. A serial port has 9 pins a VGA port has 15. A $20 graphics card is all that is required.
