Help picking an i3 Haswell processor

I'm putting together a cheap htpc build for a neighbor and using some spare components I have. It's just a machine for web browsing and watching vids. No gaming or editing.

I'm donating a case, peripherals, some DDR 3 RAM and used Gigabyte GA H97 D3H motherboard, socket 1150, so I'm looking for a cheap basic Haswell i3 that also has graphics. I need a PSU and SSD also but that's the easy part.

For budget, I'm in Canada, so just a cursory look at Newegg prices means I'm looking at anything from about $80 to $180. I'm flexible on price, I just want to go with the cheapest of the i3's that I could use that would do the job.

My own rig has an i7 4790 but I know squat about the i3 Haswell line other than the fact that it fits the 1150 mobo socket. So I need help on this one.

Thanks

I mean the i3 4130 is the most common option, all the other options are slightly faster but might cost slightly more. I'd just try to find a 4130 on eBay for $60 US or less and have it shipped. Buying a new Haswell part is a waste of money IMO.

Basically anything on eBay from US to Canada you'll have the exchange to deal with and duty or import fees. Yes there are deals, but it's the reality of ordering anything new or used from US to Canada.

So just a quick look and I see a listing like this which is a used 4130 for $69:

http://www.ebay.ca/itm/INTEL-CORE-I3-4130-HASWELL-PROCESSOR-3-4GHZ-5-0GT-S-3MB-L3-LGA1150-CPU-SR1NP-/222652672427?hash=item33d72229ab:g:tJYAAOSwmblZxAKh

In cart after exchange, shipping and import fees at checkout it's $109.64 CAD. Still, honestly for Canada that's not too bad. I think you're on the right track and buying used would be a good choice.

To give you an idea, when components get to the end of their life cycle in Canada, and etailers like Newegg or Amazon (FBA) run out of stock, then all the 3rd party sellers take over. For example, the only current listing I can see from PC Partspicker is from the same seller (EOL Tech on Newegg and Amazon) who want to charge $314 CAD for a 4130. After tax and shipping? Try $351.80 ... yah, total bs, but that's the reality here. It happens with mobo's. CPU's, GPU's, etc They are still in their life cycle in the US but in Canada they run out sooner and the criminal rip off artists move in. Seriously ... $351 for a 4130??? Not on my life

I don't know much about the 1150 socket Pentium line either. Would any of those processors have integrated graphics and do the job as well?

Thanks for the advice on Pentiums. Doesn't sound like the way I want to go.

I'm not interested in the extra hassle of trying to sell my 1150 mobo and DDR 3 RAM. I'm just trying to help someone out and I think your original suggestion is a good one, and all things considered it's the way to go - buy a used 4130. I think that's what I'll do.

Thanks for the input.

Just list out what you can get these for (including shipping and taxes) and then it'll be easier to make a decision:

Pentium G3258
Pentium G3460
i3 4130
i3 4170
i3 4340
i3 4370
i5 4440

Or you can just generally browse and see what's best for you. The bottom 3 have the best iGPUs, 4130/4170 have slightly worse ones, and the Pentiums are a little worse yet.
