Msi afterburner and OC memory question

Im not sure the ins and outs of how all the oc stuff works. But i seem to have dialed in a decent OC. But im curious as of now i got +300 on the memory for my 1080ti. I was wondering if you go to high will the GPU shut itself off first or can you literally damage the memory with a to high of a oc on it?

Like I said you could go +50MHz at a time and see if it crashes. Or you could just leave it alone.

Maybe I wasn't saying it right. The way I overclock memory is +50Mhz at a time. So if I were you and wanted to know the limit, already running +300MHz, I would go +350Mhz and test. If it crashes, dial it back down to 300Mhz and either be content or go 310Mhz, 320Mhz, etc. until you find the limit.
Well you want to increase clock speeds in small increments, especially when you get pretty far from the factory speed. If you went +1000Mhz from the start, I've heard that could do physical damage to the silicon. When you go in small increments, it will reach a limit and you will notice in the form of artifacts, display driver crash, or a system crash. That is quite normal for overclockers else they wouldn't know the limit of their hardware. For memory I'd say 50Mhz until you find a limit, then back of that last 50Mhz and if you want to try further increase in 10Mhz increments.

I ran superposition on 4k settings, with OC of 85 on core and 300 on memory. No crashes and got 9800 score. However when i ran it with 90 on core superposition and valley would both crash

Yeah but you were refering to crashing. I hadnt crashed on 300 on memory. And i wanted to ask this question before i tried going higher. DOnt want to ruin my gpu

Well that answers my question partly

But my main thing i really want to know is will a to high of a mem oc ruin the memory on it? Or will it safe shut down on itself?
 
I've seen GPUs that I own/have owned crash dozens of times from the memory and core clock going past its limit. It just shuts down and you start it back up and turn the clock back down to a stable speed. But this was all with small incremental increases.

I already said if you went too far all at once, as in way past where it could actually run stable, (I've always heard) the silicon could become damaged and not run as stable as it did before even at factory speeds.

Simple answer though is yes too high of mem oc can ruin your memory. But +50Mhz increments each time you oc, then test, and you will be fine.

Some people come here and say they moved the slider all the way to the right to +1000Mhz and it crashed, just to ask why it crashed and why it won't run at +1000Mhz. It was working after they went back to factory clocks, but do that enough times and it might stop working sooner or later.
