Fallout 4 sudden low frames?

So I was playing my fallout 4 at 1080p with fps never going below 30 and reaching a 50-60 inside or in empty spaces yesterday. Today I can't even hit 30fps anywhere! This is really irritating me and I want to fix this but I don't know what's the problem. I've lowered settings but that didn't seem to help and I don't want to start playing at a lower res. My gpu is the gtx 560 ti core clock overclocked to 940mhz.

I've had this once - mid game the framerate dropped to unplayable. I just exited and went to bed - it was fine the next day.

This was with a big i7 with 1080Ti - so shouldn't be resource limited. Hasn't happened again since them (couple of weeks).

I'd blame something updating in the background (Windows!) - this was (too) late at night.

Thanks for the response! I guess it was something in the background bc after trying everything I shut off my pc and walked away then i turned it back on today and opened it up it was running like how it was before
