Well it is, any earlier one will not have had refinements for newer games made, it's still a current GPU so it is supported, if something like the 7950 were being considered then perhaps support stopped 6 months ago.

Would u recommend using Afterburner or Wattman with the latest driver (Crimson 17.9.2) for the most stability and best overclock?
