Hey guys. A friend of mine wants to know how many watts his system requires. He currently has a 550w power supply and he is wondering if he needs more. Thanks in advance.

Solution
Psu wise the above stated s12 620 would do, but to oc the pants off of that fx, a 990fx is required. Only the 990fx has good thermal solution. A 970 and lower will have throttling issues at that heat generated.

A *quality* 550W would be fine. Though I'd note to your friend that unless he plans on upgrading his platform in the near future, the 1080 wouldn't provide a huge amount of value above and beyond a 1070 or 1060 on an FX chip.

In order to answer, you'll need to tell us what your friend's system has in it. Kinda like asking how many hot digs you'll need for ya BBQ, w/o telling is how many peeps you invited.

However try this... since 99.5% of the time, PSU size is determined by GFX card

1. Google "Guru3d [insert GFX card model here]"

2. Go to Power Consumption page

Example

1. Google "Guru3d 1060" and we arrive here:

2. Hit the drop down and find power consumption page amd w earrive here:
http://www.guru3d.com/articles_pages/msi_geforce_gtx_1060_gaming_x_plus_review,8.html

3. Read what it says:

Here is Guru3D's power supply recommendation:

GeForce GTX 1060 - On your average system the card requires you to have a 350~400 Watts power supply unit.

If you are going to overclock your GPU or processor, then we do recommend you purchase something with some more stamina

Since there's no real savings below 500 watts for quality PSUs... I'd buy one of these:

1080 180W
fx 125W that is 405 W right there, a 550 will do fine IF IT IS A QUALITY UNIT. not every PSU is made equally or remotely similar

corsair CX550M budget friendly
seasonic S12II or M12II 620W budget friendly
EVGA G2 or G3 650W Top of the line
corsair RM650x Top of line 10 yr warranty

For a 1080, a very good quality 550w will do, bit if your friend wants to get at least some performance out of that 1080, he'll need to OC the pants off that FX cpu, 4.5GHz or better. In which case a decent or better 620w/650w would be better, especially since some sales actually put those psus cheaper than the 550w versions sometimes.

Absolutely agree, plus if you ever decide too add some more stuff to your PC or swap in some mor power-hungry components, you have some room to work with.

As above ....

Here is Guru3D's power supply recommendation:

GeForce GTX 1080 - On your average system the card we recommend a 600 Watts power supply unit.
GeForce GTX 1080 SLI - On your average system the cards we recommend a 800 Watts power supply unit.

If you are going to overclock your GPU or processor, then we do recommend you purchase something with some more stamina.
