What you got, will apparently get you by for now, if you're satisfied with its performance. Are there better buys? yes. The FM1 based platform is pretty much at a dead end, and was replaced with FM2 then FM2+, and now all of that is replaced with the AM4 platform. Intel has stuff that will beat it and keep you within a $150...

More than likely not. Any building of any kind pays it's weight in experience if you're doing it yourself. As a builder this is more critical than just having a good setup. Any struggle or failure is good failure because it provides that much experience. Not to mention, if you're over in what you need in power, eventually you won't be. I know that there's a lot of gripe about "futureproofing" but there is no harm in having a graphics card that will handle anything for the next 10 years. So just weigh the benefits versus what you see as 'wasted'. It'd be hard to do anything when it comes to building that is a complete waste.

that's the problem. there are not any good FM1 CPU's anymore. an intel pentium can outperform any of them so you best bet when you are able to is get an AMD ryzen or intel core 7th or upcoming 8th generation CPU and motherboard

The FM1 based platform is pretty much at a dead end, and was replaced with FM2 then FM2+, and now all of that is replaced with the AM4 platform. Intel has stuff that will beat it and keep you within a $150 budget (USD), and Ryzen will beat it as well although it is a little more expensive*. (Ryzen APUs aren't here, yet.)

If it is new enough, you might be able to return it all (motherboard, RAM, APU/CPU) and get better stuff, but if any of it is used or beyond a return period, you might be locked into it now.

For us to have a better feel for what you can get, we need to know what the exact currency is: 150$ would suggest AUD, while $150 m, I have no idea. What country are you in?

*Price comparison based on USD and US sources.

EDITED to reflect missing socket platforms skipped over in replacements for FM1.

You're right. I skipped the FM2/FM2+ generations after Llano.... (still ultimately replaced by AM4.) Which means, unless the OP was able to get NOS, it was used... which might mean fresh currency only for replacement.

I know I was using my Phenom II 955BE up to about a year and a half ago, and fell back to it while I got my current platform fixed due to issues. It was still pretty capable, although its age was felt with some games. I didn't even look to examine anything that wasn't AM3 though in 2010.

This of course, hinges on the OP's location, how much they can and want to pay for shipping (where applicable) and the availability of those parts within the range of areas they can purchase from AND remain in budget.

Of course, if you're REALLY determined, you can always find a way to finance the build you want. I took out a loan, worked three jobs and have been paying and building my way into the build I have now for a while. It just depends on your level of determination to go after what you want.
