The i5-8400 boosts to 4Ghz, so no worries there. It'll be superiour to the curreng gen in every way and, yes, even the 8400 will game better than Ryzen, depending on your GPU. The only disadvantage is that only Z series 370 MBs are coming out this year. SO that mean you can only get an overclocking, more expensive MB as comparet to what you can get for 7th...

1600 is your best option for anything cheaper than the 7700k IMO.

My gaming rig is a a Ryzen, and I use Intel for video editting...so you don't always have to follow conventional wisdom. Both make good chips and cpus are not the only component in the rig!

Personally I got a 1600x, because I had no intention of using the stock cooler, which meant the "free" cooler with a 1600 was worth zero dollars.
The price difference for me in Canada was $30 between 1600 and 1600x.
I thought $30 for a better shot in the silicon lottery was worth it.

Your Mileage May Vary. :)

I agree. I put a NXZT Kraken x62 on a 1600x build I did for a co-worker and the math was similar for me.

I agree. The intel core 7000 series chipsets are basically just rebranded versions of skylake chipsets. The only difference being higher clock speeds and newmotherboard chipsets that only add to intels traditional bs. The only reason to get a 7000 series cpu is if you either want an overclockable core i3 or you want to invest in intels new optaine memory module, which is the sole reason why I'm actually going to bother buying an intel cpu in the future.

Just see some website about intel annouced 8th gen
More core but also lower clockspeed that 7th gen
Even current clock speed of 1600 @3,2 still better than i5-8400 @2,4

All that being said, Ryzen 5 is highly competitive sop, unless you really want intel, there really isn't much of a reason not to get the 1600X.
