Hello mates ,
I am a noob when it comes to networking itself so I will need your help.

Starting with my connection speed it's a 50mbps vdsl connection and I plan to make it 100 in the near future.
I game a lot so what I need is the absolute priority for me so I can have the best ping possible.

The connected devices :
The only wired connection it's my pc via Ethernet.
Wirelessly it's a ps4 , 4 phones , a tv , 2 laptops and my brothers pc. They don't care about the best wifi they simply want to have access.

So I was looking for the Asus Ac68u modem/router as it has a good word and my company's modem died today but it seems expansive.
Is this modem/router overkill for my needs? If so will a modem/router like Ac52u or Ac55u enough?

Thanks,

Leonidas

You could buy the crappiest router on the market and buy a 1mbit connection and you would get the same ping times. The ping time is mostly related to distance between you and the server. As long as you have more bandwidth than the game requires your bandwidth will not affect the ping times.

Since you are planning to run wired from your prospective there is no difference between the routers you list.

On the wireless side you want to match the end devices. Does no good to buy a router that has features for example that use 4 antenna when you end device only have 2. If you actually do not care about the wireless performance buy the cheapest device available.

My previous crappy company's ZTE didn't have a proper qos, when my brother was downloading a torrent then my ping spiked + it was increased in General. I just want my router to manage the gaming users to have the priority that's why I was looking for that expensive router. So basically for me ac52u vs ac68u is the same?

All asus routers run the same software image.

QoS will not really help with torrent because of how it works. It can cause burst of traffic that cause spikes even with QoS. You would have to set the download rates extremely low for it to work. It would in effect make torrent not usable and many other things for his pc. Be better to a agreement that he not run torrent when you want to run games.

I see , thanks for the explanation and the help , I ordered dsl-ac68u for the extra features that it pack's + better protection. I know that it's a bit old but I expect to keep it at least 5 years.
