I threw together this mining rig with some leftover parts I had in the garage. But.... I've encountered a problem.

old i3, r9 280x, and a O.C. 7850.
I have two 600W power supplies, both bronze, one corsair one EVGA.
They both work fine, but neither of them support multi GPU's. So I hooked everything up in the case, and hooked up the 7850 to the PSU in the case. I have the other PSU sitting outside and utilizing the paper clip trick, it's juicing the r9 280x 8pin things. No risers or anything, both cards are in the PCI slots in the mobo. Is there anything wrong with the 8pin connectors coming from a separate PSU?

It was working fine for a few days but then I got greedy and tried to OC the 280x and it crashed. Now it won't boot with both cards installed but it will boot with just one... any guesses? Can I try and power the CPU from the PSU outside the case to help balance the load a bit?

Correction: It boots, but it hangs after the windows loading screen and goes to black screen when both cards are connected. And I'm assuming the computer freezes at that point, because I cannot connect via team viewer which I normally can... it starts with windows.

They're already both running because of the paperclip trick thing.
Does it matter that the GPU power comes from the PSU that's not connected to the mobo in anyway?
What about the CPU power?

So can I just paperclip trick the "power good" lead as well? I'm assuming that's all those "add a psu" adapters do, minus the luxury of not having to manually flip the switch on the slave PSU.

I discovered the problem. It wasn't power afterall.

In my excitement I accidentally bumped the case one time when I finally got it to boot, and it instantly crashed again. Welp the r9 280x, the problem child, has developed severe sag over the years. It sags so much now that it loses connection in the PCI-E slot. To correct this I've attached a string.... with zip ties....

DON'T JUDGE ME ITS FUKIN WORKIN.

But yea, it boots now and has been stable mining for the past 4 hours.
