I'm really confused right now. If I right click my PC and choose properties, I can see I'm running a 32 bit OS with a x64 based processor. From what I've read so far, I'm able to change my OS to 64 bit. However, if I run systeminfo on my computer, the system type is now listed as x86-based PC. I've read one website that states at this point I cannot install an x64 OS because of this not having capabilities of something called a PAE and NX. However, I've read on other sites that as long as the processor is x64 that's all I need to make this happen. So now I don't know what I should do. I'd prefer to run a 64 bit OS. Is there any way to determine with certainty that I would be successful in attempting this? Any help or guidance would be greatly appreciated!

Solution
yes that has the 64-bit extensions and is 64-bit capable.
I have an athlon 64 from 2003 that is one of the first consumer x64 chips. intel quickly jumped on the bandwagon and added 64 bit extensions to their lineup. 64 bit chips have been around for at least 14 Years, the result of this is there is an amazing chance that most CPU's running are 64-bit ready.

pick a 64-bit OS and install away knowing it will work. enjoy

all x64 processors are in effect a 32-bit processor with x64 extensions. the processor can run 32-bit code fine because it is a 32-bit chip. a 32-bit chip that can run 64-bit code. the main difference is the amount of memory available to the CPU. 2 to the 32 power is 4GB and 4GB is the 32 bit memory limit. 2 to the 64th will give total RAM addressable by a 64-bit CPU.
what CPU do you have?

My processor is relatively old. It's a Pentium dual-core E5200 2.5ghz. as for the question of wanting a 32 bit operating system, I don't. I installed it a few years back not knowing the difference, and just left it as that. I'm hoping I can follow the steps found in another tomshardware post in an effort to reinstall as a 64 bit OS. I just want to make sure it's possible first before I make the attempt and find out the hard way I cannot. If need be, I can send pics of all this confusion.
