Im using G.skill 8gb ddr4 2400 mhz ram. i want to add one more stick but i was wondering if i can buy some other brand say corsair? i want to know that if it will make any difference if i buy 8gb ddr4 2400 mhz ram of some other brand?

Solution

well that depends. if you get both dimms to work, it may be at the lowest common denominator. So lets your current ram is CL16, and the new stick is CL17 (but there may be other timings that...

of course it makes a difference.

The advise is always to buy a matched kit to ensure compatibility. So two sets of the same DIMMS. They are sold as kits.

If you match one DIMM from one company and another from a different company, you may have issues with timings etc. You might have to play around with two different sticks of ram to get them to work together with no guarantee they will.

ok so what are the factors that i should keep in mind? i only bought single stick that time... i think 2400mhz, voltage, latency will be enough to match. isnt it?

ideally you need to have the same timings and latency. That might make it easy to configure the DIMMS.

If i were to offer a solution, I would say get a matched set (rules out the timing issues ) and sell your current ram to offset the cost.

You could take a chance on a different single DIMM, and it may work. You just can't be certain.

suppose i get different DIMM, i guess the worst case scenario is it'll not work and system wont boot. but if system boots will i see some performance issue if voltage, timings and latency dont match?

well that depends. if you get both dimms to work, it may be at the lowest common denominator. So lets your current ram is CL16, and the new stick is CL17 (but there may be other timings that need to change too) then you may have to run it at the looser timings to get both to work. Thats kinda what I mean. With two different sticks, it may work, but there will be a lot of trial and error as you get things working well together.
