ASUS ROG G550JX RAM upgrade

Hi, guys. My friend have an ASUS ROG G550JX and planning to upgrade his RAM to 12GB or 16GB from 8GB. He told me that he had upgraded it from 4GB to 8GB, looked the specs of the ROG online and it says 2 DIMM socket for expansion, so i assume he can put 1 more stick of 4GB RAM in there.
Now, the question is, can I mix 2 different RAMs but the same amount on a laptop? Right now i dont know what kind of ram he has, but pretty sure he has a different stick. Thoughts?

Technically u can run 2 sticks with different brands, as long as they are having the same speed.
e.g. say u have a DDR3 1666mhz stick, and if u add another DDR3 stick with 1333mhz, then u can only run it on DDR3 1333.

But its always safer to go with...
