XP laptop on DMZ to run UPS monitor and send email notifications

I have an old XP laptop that is used only for running my UPS monitor software UPSilon 2000, which monitors and controls the UPS for my key network hardware (modem, router, switches, hubs etc).

Currently this XP laptop is not connected to my network.

The software is capable of providing SMTP email notification of UPS events, and I want to use this to notify me of power issues when I am not at home, so I need it to connect to the network.

I have tried connecting to my guest WiFi, which is isolated from the main network by the router - however the guest WiFi has WEP security and the laptop WiFi can only handle older security protocols...and I'm not willing to leave the guest WiFi unsecured.

The other option I can see is to connect this XP laptop to the LAN, by setting it as a DMZ host in my router settings....I am thinking this would isolate it from the rest of my network.

My question - given that I need the UPS monitor to send emails, is this DMZ setting a workable option? Is there anything I should put onto the Windows XP machine (already has AVG) to lock it down further, and am I putting my network at risk doing this?

Thank you.

Solution
WEP s an old, very unsecure WFI protocol. You should be using WPA2 on your Guest network.

as for the DMZ option, make sure you install a Firewall software since the DMZ will expose your laptop directly to the outside world.
