Hi! I'm just looking on advice on upgrading my gaming desktop, I'm not in a rush to upgrade it but I'm certainly interested in upgrading it.

My current setup is:
Intel i5-4460
Gigabyte H97M-D3H
2 x 4GB RAM
MSI GTX960
500GB Memory

I'm definitely looking into getting more storage space but other than that I'm not sure what else I should prioritise upgrading.

Solution
well considering, your motherboard is an H97 board I would suggest a few things. all depends on your budget of course buyt I will try to use the cashvalue as a basis. to compare what you get for it.

choice one, update what you have; which would involve Used components upgrading to an I7-4970 (not K because of your motherboard), upgrade ram to DDR3-1600 (2x8gb)16GB and upgrade video card to a GTX 970 SSC, cost: (price based on averages here) CPU: 175$ ,. Ram 90.$, GTX970 : 175$
total cost 440$

choice two: get newer version hardware: I7-6700K, Z170 Mobo, 8GB Ram, for the same price.

CPU: Intel - Core i7-6700K 4.0GHz Quad-Core Processor ($309.99 @ SuperBiiz)...

then add a video card to this setup. Video Card: EVGA - GeForce GTX 1060 6GB 6GB GAMING Video Card ($259.99 @ Amazon)

Personally I can tell you the 4xxx series I7 perform quite well in gaming, the 970 SSC compares to the 1060 3GB in performances.
its up to you..

Solution

The first upgrade is to the 1060 6GB. I can't recommend the 970 because the boost wouldn't be justified by the investment. The 1070 is a horrible value at the moment.

After that I would most certainly look to the used market for a 4790. I'd not invest $300+ for the 4790's performance boost. The H97 doesn't like overclocking so you'd have to rely on the stock and turbo boost clocks.

DO you use MSI Afterburner? You can enable its OSD(many how to videos over at YouTube) so that it displays resource usage in real-time. You can see if your PC is utilizing some, most or all 8GB RAM which would tell you if that upgrade is a priority or if it can wait on the back burner.

On a side note the 500GB memory is usually described as a hard drive, HDD, storage(drive) or boot drive. Memory is usually referring to RAM.
