Hello,

Ran into some trouble last night when gaming. With the computer on moderate load, my PC randomly shut off. Screen went blank, lights on and in the unit completely turned off, and was unresponsive to the power button.

After unplugging the PSU and popping the computer lid off, I tried disconnecting the graphics card from the PSU and then powering the computer on, and it worked! She fully powered up and boots into the OS.

I'm wondering if I have a faulty PSU or graphics card here? The PSU will power all the lights on on the mobo, however when the graphics card is plugged in the computer refuses to turn on.

Specs:

i7 4770
Asus Maximus Gene Vii
ASUS R9 290 DirectCU ii
Corsair AX 860

Edit: I've also tried swapping PCI slots for the GC, issue still persists.

So I swapped one of my friends video card into my computer with my PSU, and it works fine. So it turns out it was my video card that was the issue, I'm guessing it's shorted out or something and causing the power supply trip a safety switch and not turn the computer on.

I know this will sound weird, but did you do a good visual inspection on the card and smell it? Of the components I've smoked over the years, two of the graphics cards showed obvious capacitor leakage and stunk. A burnt power supply smells great too. There's no going back from that. lol. I know it sounds silly but no use going any further if it's toasted.

I'll pull the GC out and poke around. It's out of warranty anyway, so I don't mind. The PSU is still within warranty and I've contacted cosair to see if they can provide some insight.

If the graphics card were toast, would it prevent the computer from powering on? I'd just assume the computer would post like normal but I wouldn't get any video to my monitor.

You could have lost part of the power supply for sure, but a quick check of the video card wouldn't hurt. First time it happened I got the HDD lights, the beep, the fans, and just a black screen. After a few frustrating minutes, pulled the case open to re-seat the video card and that's when I saw the mess and got a whiff. Tossed the card aside, plugged into onboard graphics and everything went fine. I had random shutdowns on a different system and a power supply was the fix. Troubleshooting can be frustrating but a quick visual is easy.
