Hello all,

I've recently been doing upgrades from my original PC which was an Alienware X51 R1. Here are my specs - https://pcpartpicker.com/user/z0mbiezak/saved/tzMvVn

I'm looking for some help regarding my performance spikes in Task Manager. I'm on idle, and have Chrome, Steam, and Open Hardware Monitor open. I will get spikes up to 3.88 GHz / 30% (highest I've seen while idle).

I'm wondering if this is normal? Also, I am wondering if my build will be safe being that I have a non-k on a z77 mobo. Is there anything I can do to keep my hardware safe while playing games?

Please, explain like I'm five... This is my first build. All my parts were purchased thinking that I could easily transfer over everything to a new board. After purchasing the 3770 a few months ago, and realizing recently the 1155 socket isn't the standard, I'm kind of stuck with my parts for the time being.

I see guides on how to overclock the 3770 non-k, but I am not trying to overclock by any means. I sometimes record videos for fun, and I don't want to fry my PC when rendering a video. Is there anyway to restrict whatever the OC'ing does so I can stay safe?

Thanks ahead of time

There isn't any overclocking going on unless you specifically go into the BIOS and do it. If you have a 3770, it will run the same on a z77 motherboard as it will on any other motherboard, there's nothing to worry about. I'd imagine the 30% load while "idle" is something like chrome being chrome or steam looking for updates. If it's just spikes for a second or two I wouldn't worry about it, but if it happens really often and for more than 10s at a time then maybe it's worth looking into.

Thanks for your reply. I just started up CSGO for a few minutes while having OHM running on my second monitor under the Task Manager. Just playing something like a 1v1 server was causing it to sit at 50% utilization, and 3.8 GHz. Whenever I'd kill the enemy, there is an explosion effect (community server), and it would boost up to 95% utilization.

Since my OS was still installed on my SSD, I had all my settings from when I was using my X51 R1 setup. I've since changed my power settings to balanced, rather than high performance, and I notice now when idle I'll only use around 1.5 GHz - 2.5 GHz. So that solved a bit of the issue.

Now, I'm running CSGO at all low settings, as it give you a visual advantage, as well as performance increase being on low settings. I just don't understand why it's spiking up to 3.8 GHz when I'm playing, and constantly at 50%.

Do you think wiping my drives clean, and re-installing the OS fresh would solve anything? or is the possible usage of x3 120mm 120HD Corsair fans + the 140mm intake fan + the Noctua heatsink possibly causing the power consumption?
