im currently using

gtx 970 strix
i5 6400
8gb ddr4
h110m-s2h
xfx pro 550w psu
with 3 fans and alpine 11 gt
im looking to get a gtx 1070, but im stuck on deciding weather or not to upgrade cpu too or if its even necessary. If so then will my cpu cooler be good enough? Im hoping to play most big games on ultra 1080p 60fps+. Also if there is anything else i should upgrade too.

Solution

it's normal, but how about the GPU usage?
if ur CPU reach 100% when gaming but the GPU hovers around somewhere else (not on 90-100% too) it's likely a CPU bottleneck
if the GPU also reach 90-100% most of the times, this means that's the full capability of your PC (meaning the problem might lie somewhere else)

personally, i don't think it's necessary
your GPU is good enough to run most games on high 1080p@60
if u want to upgrade, i suggest u jump to the 1080 instead since that would be much more worthwhile, with that GPU, opting for the kabylake is also a good choice (BIOS update and u can run it with the i7 7700 just fine :D)

with this pair, there should be no bottleneck even on CPU intensive games :)

i wish i could afford a 1080. The reason i have decided on 1070 is because its affordable for me. My system atm struggles to stay at 60fps on battlefield 1 on ultra. And im hoping the 1070 will help fix that problem. Not too sure if the 1070 alone will be enough though, without the help of a different cpu? Have also seen the reommendations for games like battlefront 2 and forza and am worried my pc wont handle it well on high/ultra settings.

to be honest, running the BF1 on ultra with 970 is really possible, your CPU might be the one holding you back, as the game is pretty CPU intensive, especially with many player around :)
getting a decent aftermarket cooler is also a good option to prevent any throttling (if this is what happens to your CPU anyway)

no it's not worth it
don't go to K processor unless u have an unlocked mobo
i can't really suggest anything as upgrading the CPU is not really worth it, unless u're going with the i7 which is pretty costly overall

hmm but after doing some research, there are people that manage to get stable 60 at high/ultra settings
do u monitor your GPU + CPU usage? the result might show us whether your rig reach its limit / there's another problem going on here (instead of bottlenecking) :)

tbh i haven't got into monitoring my pc yet i only joined the 'master race' around a month ago and haven't got a clue lol. But if you could give me a link to a tutorial or explain to me what to do it would be appreciated.

then there's a problem there, could be:
thermal throttling (check your temps, 80~ should be still fine but u should start being wary, on 90~ it might be the reason of your performance drops)
driver issue (can be fixed if u upgrade your driver to the latest one possible)
or try tuning down the CPU intensive settings and see if the performance improves (since the GPU is more than capable of this game, the CPU might be the one holding u back)
