Hey guys, I just finished building my (mostly) new pc, and for some reason that I cannot work out the internet is slow beyond words no matter what I do. I've installed the latest drivers for it but nothing is functioning properly.

Specs:
Cpu i5 7600K
Motherboard ASUS Prime Z270-P
Power supply Corsair RM750i
Gpu XFX R9 280x
Boot drive Corsair Force MP500
I'm using the onboard Ethernet port

Everything runs perfectly until internet is involved then it just grinds to a halt.

Open Task Manager and take a look at everything that is running.

Likewise use Performance Monitor and Resource Monitor to identify some app, service, or process that may be slowing your build down.

Could be just some balky update running in the background. Or continually trying to "phone home" and failing....

And double check the network adapter's configuration. When you updated the drivers some default setting may have been put into place and the adapter and router are no longer playing well together.

What network adapter is built into your motherboard?

I've watched task manager like a hawk trying to find something, barely anything gets over 0.5Mbps.

I'm also not great with networking stuff, so I wouldn't have a clue where to start with changing settings like that.

The network adapter built in is Realtek RTL8111H

What OS are you running? Had it in my mind that it was Windows 10 - need to verify....

What about Resource Monitor and Performance Monitor?

Boot up and watch for a few minutes. Leave the monitoring window open but shrink it some and slide to one side.

Then access the internet. See what, if anything takes a hit.

To change network adapter settings:

First you need to gain access to your network adapters configuration.

Open Device Manager > Network Adapters. Right click your Realtek adapter and select Properties.

Go to the Advanced tab. Explore by left clicking down through the Property options. Just be careful not to change anything. "Cancel" is your friend.

Look at Speed & Duplex: Value should be 1.0 Gbps Full Duplex

However, there are many other options. Most should be left alone....

Who manages your network's router? You may need to work with that person to configure your network adapter to match the router.

Or otherwise configure the router to allow you internet access at speed. Could be some router QoS setting slowing things.

Sorry! I thought I put that in my original post, it's Windows 10 Pro. I also let Resource Monitor and Performance Monitor run and couldn't see anything out of the ordinary.

I changed the setting you recommended and there seems to be a noticeable improvement already, I'll update you again in a few hours.

And my router is pretty much handled by me, so there's nothing to go on there.

Well, looks like it didn't help as much as it seemed. Going to go out in the morning and buy a PCI network card, hopefully that will be the solution.
