Hi all,

My son currently has XBOX1 and a PC but is slowly but surely moving over to PC for gaming. His current spec is an AMD A8 7650k R7. He's got 16gig of DDR3 ram in there and a budget AMD graphics card running along side the R7.

My question is, would a half decent graphics card put this PC in the realms of Destiny 2 or am I looking at a whole new PC. His birthday is coming up in a couple of weeks. I can spend up to £150 on a card if need be. I don't mind second hand either.

Any advise would be gratefully appreciated.

Cheers

Cheers for the advice all. I've installed a Gigabyte 1050ti OC in there and... man... what a difference. He had an R7 240 GPU in there before. Although it also had 4gb of ram it was never a very good card I don't think.

He's tried ARK on extreme settings and get a very reputable fps of around 25 so he's eased back on a couple of settings and is getting 45-50 on a game that he couple barley play on low setting before.

There's a beta of COD, I think it is, he tried with his old card and it was unplayable but the 1050ti does a really smooth job with everything on medium.

We've tried a few more like No mans sky and Subnautica and it's the same story all round I think. He bumps everything up to max then backs off until it smooths...

Gtx 1050ti at 150$ will be the perfect choice. There nay be some lag at CPU intensive games but mostly its playable for 900p at medium/high setting around 60 fps .It also can handle 1080p based on the games .what resolution he playing at ?

Cheers all for your answers. For now, looking at specs for minimum on Destiny 2 his R8 will just cut the mustard. I'll get the GTX 1050ti as per your advice and a decent 500w supply. Destiny is going to be the biggest thing he'll play for a while so if it doesn't do the job with the above I'll look at new MB and processor.

Most APU based systems have low wattage power supplies which really limits your upgrade path.

If you only have 300W availiable

Trade the A8 APU for an A10 7890K and sell the original
the new apu costs £110, you can sell the old one to recover some cost. It has the same power requirements as the A8 but double the
Graphics power and a 25% faster cpu

Wether this is worth it really depends on this other GPU your son has and if he even uses the APU graphics.
If your son knows about these things, it may be worth giving him the cash and suggesting what you intended it for. He may have ideas of his own.

If you have more than 400W, get a used GTX970 or a new RX460, both are good options for that budget.

Thanks beegmouse. He doesn't have a clue. I program computers for a living and used to do my own builds round 12 years ago. A lot has changed since then I noticed. Will an A10 slot straight into his board? I've always been a pentium man so not familiar with AMD stuff.

I think he'll be good for medium settings on Destiny 2 which is the ultimate test.

All in all, for a £145 this card is not only cheap but it's also a massive upgrade for anyone with a low to bottom end PC that wants to dabble into gaming without breaking the bank.

Cheers again
