PC booting to black screen, fans running at high speeds?

Hi there,

I don't post on here much as I don't have many technical issues that I can't solve myself. But, today when I turned my computer on I noticed that the fans were running much faster than usual, and the pc wasn't booting at all. A similar thing has happened in the past where I would start the computer and it would turn on normally (fans normal speed) but there would be no display output, and a simple press of the reset button would fix this. But this time is very different, it seems the reset and power buttons do absolutely nothing, and so I had to resort to switching the power off at the PSU.

I did some googling and it said try re-sitting the ram, but to no prevail. I then tested each ram stick by itself.. and still nothing. I really don't know what else to try as most of my components are super stuck in there due to the cables being super fiddly. I don't have much money so I can't really afford a new motherboard/more parts.. I suspect that it could be the motherboard but have no sure fire way of knowing. Are there some hardware tests I can do on the mobo to see if there is a problem???

My specs are:
Gigabyte H87-HD3
i5-4570
8gb corsair vengeance
Corsair RM550w PSU

Any advice would be super appreciated!!

Thanks for reading

Ethan

Hey thanks for the quick reply. Would it be the CLR_CMOS pins? as I can see those. and would I touch the pins while the mobo is on? or off?

Thanks

Turn the PC off and unplug it from the power.

Then touch the pins with a screwdriver.

Plug back in and power up.

Okay just tried that and I don't think it's worked.. Does that pretty much mean it's the motherboard?

Thanks

Nothing, the PC was off when I touched the pins. When I turn it back on, the fans ramp up and it's still a black screen.I tried touching the pins while the pc was on (probs a bad idea..) and it just restarted the pc and still black screen.

No, sorry, it's an MSI gtx 770. I didn't think it would matter as I swapped the hdmi cable to the motherboard output to make sure I wasn't missing the boot screen.

Pull the graphics card out and plug into the motherboard directly.

hmm.. Okay I will try when I can get ahold of a screwdriver. Just moved to uni and didn't bring my set with me D:

Do you think it is likely that it's the motherboard at this point? I don't see what else could be causing these issues..

Thanks

Dunno, yet.

Remove the graphics card and reset the bois again.

Make sure the power is unplugged.

Also unplug the monitor from the power and wait a few mins.

Okay I will update you when I've tried this. Thanks for your help

Hi,

First thing I would try is remove the ram and see if the pc bips.

If not you need to test know working psu.
If still no beep, most likely a cpu / motherboard issue.

Also, if the pc is more than 3 year old you might want to test with a new motherboard battery to see if it could prevent pc from booting.

I've tried removing the ram as I said in my original post. I also don't remember the PC ever making a beep sound which is kinda annoying, I must have removed the buzzer thing when I built it.

I am trying to find a friend willing to lend me their PC components but I really don't see it happening so I won't have a working PSU to use unfortunately :(

and finally I'm waiting on getting a screwdriver so I can remove the graphics card and get to the mobo battery.

Thanks for your advice I will try these when I can.
