Hey everybody, I have a little problem.
I had build a PC that has a MSI z-170a Tomahawk mobo, i5-6600K and 8gb@3200mhz ram. So my motherboard supports up to 3600mhz, and I did a little research and know that whenever a dual channel is in play the frequency is divided by half(3200-2x1600; 3000-2x1500 and so on) and also that whenever the ram runs at a higher frequency than the mobo supports, then it's underclocked to whatever frequency it can handle, so I calculated that I would need 900mhz per slot on 4 sticks. My question is: if I was to buy the same ram(2x4gb) but at a lower frequency of 2133mhz would my motherboard underclock all my sticks to 4x900=3600 and would that work fine? Thanks, really appreciate some help :)

What I'd recommend is trying to...

The whole DDR in DDR4 means double data rate, which is why when you look in your system as to how fast your RAM is it only says 1600 even though the RAM is called 3200mhz. As far as buying four 900mhz sticks, that's just silly. If your system supports up to 3600mhz then you can fill all four slots with 3600mhz RAM, and even if you do buy faster RAM it would just lower the clock to what it can support. So buy some 3600mhz RAM and fill all four slots and you'll be fine, it'll all run at 3600mhz.

So basically get rid of what I have and get a new kit? Or buy exactly the same sticks? The thing is I'm on a tight budget, because I am upgrading my gpu as well, so you know - every little helps :p

What I'd recommend is trying to buy the same RAM, because 16gb is plenty for most people. And since you're on a tight budget I wouldn't recommend throwing away the RAM you have right now.
