Hi all,

For the past month or so my PC has been freezing randomly for ~1 - 4 minutes and then unfreezing. When this happens the image on screen freezes and all sound immediately stops, after it unfreezes, my PC continues doing whatever it was but during the freeze my PC loses internet connection (I'm not on Ethernet). I know this because after I unfreeze, I disconnect from anything (e.g. time out of teamspeak) and immediately reconnect.

I created this thread ( http://www.tomshardware.com/answers/id-3516278/freezes-randomly-1min-unfreezes.html ) to try and solve my problem but it was kind of dead end. I followed all suggestions (updated my BIOS, reinstalled gfx drivers, scanned for viruses, uninstalled McAfee and Bradford which had been recently installed by my Uni, and checked even viewer, re-setaed and cleaned my PC) but nothing significant came of it.

The difference between now and then is that I've notices that when playing some games, I can hear a high pitched noise coming from my PC. I tried to sound out where it is coming from and It kinda sound like the GPU but I honestly cant tell. I do know that it is not a fan causing the noise. I also notices that when the noise is present, if I unplug my keyboard or mouse and then plug it back into any USB on the back of my PC, shortly after plugging it back in, my game will freeze for just a second and during the freeze the high pitched sound will vanish but re-appear after the freeze.

Another thing worth noting is that it seems to happen WAY more frequently when I am actively using the internet e.g. downloading, gaming online, talking in skype or teamspeak, browsing on chrome. I do have a wifi card so maybe that's dying?

I'm so totally stumped as to what to do. I don't think its my RAM because I recently got 2 new 8GB sticks to replace my previous 2x4GB sticks (one of which just died) and the freezing has been present with both RAMs. Could be my anything else I suppose. I never OC'ed my GPU but I did my CPU for quite some time. I turned down the OC from 4.3 to 4.0 after this started happening.

I hope I covered everything, but if I didn't, please ask me questions. I really want to figure out what the problem is.

a dying wifi card would just cause you to lose net and throw up errors that the cards dead.
you did a clean fresh install of OS? (not just a repair/restore).

i suggest this:
have you got an offline game? does the freezing affect you when playing this game?
yes = open pc, remove sound card, net card, any other card not gpu, second hdd (unless it has the offline game) - play game ... does freezing persist?
no = problem with unplugged cards or psu
yes = open pc, remove gpu and plug monitor into the default vga out (if your pc has one), does the problem persist?
no = problem with gpu
yes = problem with psu / mobo.

A. The whine is likely coil whine. A web search will tell ya all ya need to know on the subject

B. The source of your problem will be found by looking in Windows System Logs. Open event viewer and check Windows System and Application Logs for errors or warnings. Copy the detailed text from EV into your browser's search bar to find solutions

C. Even the best WiFi won't compare with a cable ... consider running one.

If none of those solutions work, a fresh install of OS is a good step.

1. Prepare for Windows installation with USB tool or use available media
https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/windows-usb-dvd-download-tool

2. Connect boot drive data cable to lowest numbered SATA port .... but don't connect:
-Ethernet cable
-SATA Data Cable for any other drives

3. Install Windows to boot drive

4. Turn off Windows ability to install Hardware drivers
https://www.tenforums.com/tutorials/48277-enable-disable-driver-updates-windows-update-windows-10-a.html
http://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials/82137-drivers-turn-off-automatic-driver-installation.html

5. Install all hardware drivers from original media in boxes See Item 7 below

6. Connect ethernet cable and run Windows Update till it stops doing anything

7. Install latest drivers for ALL hardware from manufacturers web sites. The reason we didn't do this in step 5 is 3 fold:
-Sometimes MoBo CD comes with licensed utilities with product key embedded and these are not on web site versions
-Its advisable to establish a working out of box conditions
-Sometimes newer drivers require latest Windows Updates

If you have a 2nd drive ....

8. Shut down and connect HD data cable to 2nd lowest numbered SATA port.

9. Boot to BIOS and make sure that SSD is the 1st boot device, if not fix it

10. Boot to Windows

So I tried this, the sound wasn't present but unplugging and replugging my keyboard still caused brief freezes. Someone else pointed out that the sound I'm hearing is coil whine, which based on the video i listened to, seems to be the case. so i guess maybe it isn't my GPU?

Ok, so I've discovered that the problem is actually the network/wifi I'm connected to. When playing games online for about 6 hours using my phone as a hot spot, I had zero freezes. My Uni wants me to have McAfee and Bradford installed and running while I'm connected to wifi (both of which I don't have installed), but the freezes were present with them installed anyways.

I don't know shit about why this is causing my entire PC to freeze or if there is anything I can really do about it. I would really appreciate any insight you have before I contact tech services. Thanks again for the help.
