I've had major problems with a clean install on Windows 7. The system has kept locking up and failing to boot to or past Windows login. After reinstalling the OS several times this continues to happen. The PC will no longer boot to Windows log in and I am stuck with a black screen. I have downloaded and installed nothing but Steam and all important Windows Updates. The internet is not used except to maintain a connection to Windows update and Steam.
I have run system checks and found no issues with hardware.
Here are the stats I can give :

Windows 7 64 bit SP1
700 GB HDD
I7 920 @ 2.67 GHz
GeForce GT 740 super clocked
12 GB RAM

The PC was purchased in 09
All is original parts except the GPU, RAM, and PSU. I just upgraded the OS from the factory installed Vista 64 bit.
Any help would be appreciated.

Disk purchased from Amazon? Could be an issue with the media, but I would've expected that to rear it's head long before you got a complete install/could install updates.

I'd suggest checking the HDD with the manufacturer software (WD, SeaGate?) for a more in-depth look, opposed to Windows own built-in.

Thanks for your time Barty1884. After listening to the high drive it did sound a lot like it was failing. So I just ordered an SSD. After 9 years it was about time for an upgrade anyway.
