I currently run 2 gtx 970's SLI. I am wondering if switching to 1 gtx 1070 is a good idea. I can return 1 970 and put the refund directly into a 1070 and then give my buddy my other 970.

The real question is do I lose more or gain anything from this upgrade. Thanks for any assistance.

Loss/es:
Approximately -10fps on most games at 1080p resolution (but only approx. -3fps on 4K)

Gains:
No risk of SLI scaling issues (which happen to perform worse) in any games as you are just using a single GPU
Significantly less power consumption
Less heat and temperature
Less noise

If you want better performance in 1080p, the GTX 1080 would yield significantly better results:
